Wellington High School is warning students to stay away if they haven't been vaccinated against measles.

The school has confirmed a year 12 pupil has been diagnosed with the highly infectious disease.

The high school is asking parents of students who were in the same classes as the infected student last Monday to provide proof of immunisation before returning.

The number of measles cases in New Zealand so far this year is 1380. The majority of those - 1151 - have been in Auckland, though a spike in Queenstown has also caused medical experts concern.

Symptoms for measles include a fever, runny nose, cough, sore red eyes and then a rash.
