A drunk man jumped into a courier van, exposed himself to the driver, then urinated on the van in Dunedin's student quarter.

Police were called to an incident in Dunedin's student quarter on Sunday afternoon where a man allegedly exposed himself to a courier driver when she returned from delivering a parcel.

The driver was delivering a parcel on Castle St about 1.30pm on Sunday. It is alleged the man, understood to have been intoxicated, exposed himself to the driver when she returned.

He then urinated on the vehicle, then fled.

A police spokeswoman confirmed officers were called to the scene "following a report of indecent exposure".

Officers had spoken to the man and the witness.

No charges had been laid, the spokeswoman said.

New Zealand Post declined to comment on the incident as it was "a police matter".

"We can tell you that our driver is safe and being supported," a spokeswoman said.

"We are working with the university to ensure this is addressed appropriately."

Incidents like this were "uncommon", she said.

The spokeswoman confirmed some individual contractors had cameras in their vehicles, but that was up to each driver.
