The Ministry of Health has confirmed there's a potential case of COVID-19 under investigation in Canterbury.

In a statement, the ministry says there is "one case currently under investigation" in the South Island region and that the "case is in managed isolation".

"At any one time, it is standard to have cases under investigation."

"At any one time, it is standard to have cases under investigation and as such, these aren't included in any numbers update at this stage."

It’s unclear if the individual is in managed isolation because they recently arrived back in the country or if they have been in the community.

With New Zealand being under alert level 2, the ministry says Kiwis should continue to practice good hygiene, physical distancing and wear face coverings while on public transport.

"Stay at home if you're feeling unwell, and consult your General Practice or ring Healthline to book a test if you display COVID-19 like symptoms."
