Police are investigating the death of a man who had flu-like symptoms at a Wellington motel last night.

Stuff understands emergency services were called to a motel about 10pm on Sunday night.

It's understood police took a great deal of care in dealing with the man, aged in his 40s, and wore full personal protective equipment given the man had a high fever with recent coughing and breathing problems.

It's unclear whether the man's death is being treated as a possible case of Covid-19.

Stuff has put questions to police and the Ministry of Health.

The Ministry said any updates would be covered at its 1pm briefing.

West Coast woman Anne Guenole, 74, died of the virus on Sunday morning – the first death in New Zealand.

Guenole had initially been diagnosed with influenza that was complicated by an underlying health condition, but a positive Covid-19 test came through last Saturday.
