Air New Zealand has announced it will suspend its Auckland-Shanghai service from February 9 to March 29.

Air NZ chief operational integrity and standards officer, captain David Morgan, said the suspension is due to "the potential consequence of international travel bans on crew logistics".

He also said there has been a "further decline" in customer bookings on the route over the next two months.

"Our teams are currently putting in place alternative travel options for customers impacted by the suspension and they will be contacted directly over the coming week," Morgan said in a statement on Saturday.

The airline currently operates seven services per week between Auckland and Shanghai.

New Zealand has issued a "do not travel" warning for the Hubei province of China due to the recent outbreak of coronavirus that has killed nearly 300 people.

It's recommended Kiwis avoid non-essential travel elsewhere in China.

The news follows the US government announcing it will ban foreign nationals who have visited China in the last two weeks from returning to the country.
