Climate change activist Greta Thunberg has developed a thick skin to cope with the "systematic bullying" she faces, but now her 13-year-old sister is being targeted.

The 16-year-old climate activist told Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter her sister Beata is "suffering".

"The one who suffers is my sister," she said.

"The people who write threats and hate to me do it to the whole family, even to her."

Greta says the difference is she is always travelling and inaccessible.

"People don't know where I'm staying, where I sleep at night, where I am,"

"But for my sister at home who tries to have a daily life…she is much more reachable."

Greta says her sister is her best friend and any threats that reach the family are reported to the police.

Beata is following the footsteps of their mother Malena Ernman, a renowned opera singer.

The 13-year-old performed on Swedish prime time TV Bingolotto in June -she was described as a "giant talent".

Greta Thunberg has inspired millions around the world to take part in school strikes to protest government inaction around climate change.

Her rise to fame has been peppered by angry responses from some world leaders and other figures.

US President Donald Trump shared a video of Thunberg's impassioned speech at the United Nations Climate Action Summit on Twitter.

He appeared to take a swipe at the 16-year-old, calling her "a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future".

Russian President Vladimir Putin also weighed in, saying she seemed like a "kind girl and very sincere."

"Nobody explained to Greta that the modern world is complicated and complex."

British talk show host Piers Morgan was open in his disdain for the teenager while on air. Morgan openly mocked and impersonated her. He was widely condemned for his actions.

Note from Nighthawk.NZ:

While I don't agree with what Greta Thunberg has been saying and her message not entirely true, and or using a lot of pseudo-sciences at best, with half-truths and anxiety scaremongering.

However, there is no need for any threats of any kind... this is not on.
